Plant watering with Java and Rasberry Pi

The proof of the pudding is in the eating: at XDEV, we always try to give our team the necessary freedom to get creative and try out their own ideas or crazy experiments. After all, we not only benefit from satisfied employees, but also always from the insights or new approaches gained, which then in turn enrich future projects.

In one of these side projects, we tried our hand at an automatic watering system for plants – perfect for the lazy or forgetful!

The core components are Java and a Rasberry Pi. A sensor monitors the humidity of the substrate and as soon as the measurement falls below a certain value, a small pump is triggered to supply the plant with a "sip of water".

And what can we say: it's really great to have a stack that works from the cloud down to the edge devices.
