Java Forum Nord 2026: XDEV on Starting, Restarting, and Modernizing Java Projects

Java Forum Nord takes place on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 – for the first time at Hannover Medical School (MHH). After six editions at the HCC, the conference is changing venue in order to keep ticket prices at their current level. It is organized by volunteers from Java User Groups across northern Germany and beyond. XDEV is once again part of the program this year.

Richard Fichtner, CEO of XDEV, addresses a question teams are running into regardless of where they start from: How do you find your way around the Java ecosystem in 2026 and make technology decisions that still hold up a few years down the line?

Session: “How to (Re)start Your Java Journey in 2026”

A substantial ecosystem has grown up around Java over the years: build and test tools, modern frameworks, deployment platforms, performance-tuned runtimes. On top of that come topics like AI integration, cloud-native development, and sustainable software.

The session is aimed at anyone getting started with Java, coming back after a break, or looking to modernize existing projects. It draws on hands-on experience from teams and projects of varying size and starting position.

What the session covers:

  • Finding your way through the tool and framework jungle: which decisions pay off in day-to-day work, and which ones only add complexity?
  • Improving productivity: practices that speed up development and make maintenance easier.
  • Informed technology decisions: a stack that fits your existing architecture and is still maintainable three years from now.

Program and schedule

Nora Schöner (Cloud Architect & AWS Hero) gives the opening keynote; Oliver Zeigermann closes the day. The detailed schedule will be published roughly a week before the conference.

Thinking about modernizing your Java applications?

If you want to bring your stack up to date or work down technical debt, let’s talk. Happy to do that in person in Hannover as well. If you’re there too, come say hi.
