IT-Tage 2025 in Frankfurt – Two XDEV Talks on Java Modernization & Everyday Developer Life

From December 8–11, 2025, Frankfurt am Main becomes the hub of the German-speaking IT community: IT-Tage 2025 brings software development, architecture, DevOps, AI, cloud, databases, IT security, agile methods, and IT management together under one roof. This year’s program places a special emphasis on digital sovereignty and open source.

Organized by the trade magazine Informatik Aktuell, attendees can look forward to 16 specialized sub-conferences, more than 270 practice-oriented sessions, interactive workshops, and inspiring keynotes—four days of concentrated knowledge, fresh ideas, and peer-to-peer networking.

XDEV will once again be on site in 2025—with two talks by Richard Fichtner (CEO & Principal Software Architect) and Johannes Rabauer (Senior Software Engineer). Both sessions offer hands-on insights into Java, application modernization, and the realities of day-to-day development:

Java Modernization: Breathe New Life into Your Codebase—Without Breaking the Bank

Thursday, December 11, 2025 | 10:00–10:45 AM | Kristall, Level 3

Java has been around for decades—and many codebases are just as old. So how do you bring existing applications up to date, technically and organizationally, without rewriting everything from scratch?

In this talk, Richard Fichtner demonstrates practical ways to modernize Java applications—with minimal disruption and maximum impact. Topics include:

  • Java upgrades with OpenRewrite—Reduce technical debt, adopt modern language features, and cut maintenance costs through automated refactoring.
  • From Swing to Vaadin—Preserve existing business logic while moving from classic desktop apps to modern web front ends.
  • The human factor—Modernization isn’t just about code. Keep the team engaged, avoid unnecessary retraining, and make your project attractive to new talent.

With over 20 years of Java experience, Richard shares strategies you can apply immediately—perfect for anyone looking to future-proof their Java applications.

Dev Stories with Real Takeaways: What Went Wrong—and What Worked

Thursday, December 11, 2025 | 1:00–1:45 PM | Kristall, Level 3

Software development rarely runs as smoothly as the tutorials suggest. Between legacy code, broken pipelines, unclear requirements, and sudden outages, developers often have to improvise.

Richard Fichtner and Johannes Rabauer share candid—and often humorous—stories from real-world projects: what went wrong, what they learned, and what ultimately made the difference.
Through concrete examples, they show how automation, sensible standards, and lean tooling help teams avoid common pitfalls, improve code quality, and reduce long-term strain. No buzzwords, no silver bullets—just genuine experiences from everyday development and lots of practical tips to take home.
