On September 16, 2025, this year’s Java Forum Nord will take place at the Hannover Congress Centrum (HCC). The conference, organized by the Java User Groups from Northern Germany, is the perfect opportunity for developers and IT decision-makers to exchange ideas on the latest trends and technologies in the Java world.
XDEV is excited to be represented with an engaging talk. Richard Fichtner, CEO of XDEV, will join Stefan Böhringer, research assistant and software developer at the Chair of Educational Data Science at the University of Regensburg, to talk about “BYLES: How Java, standards, and community saved an educational project.”
From Idea to Scalable Solution – The BYLES Project
In their session, Richard Fichtner and Stefan Böhringer will provide hands-on insights into the development of Germany's largest digital reading screening – the BYLES project. They will show how the project was realized using modern Java technology and in collaboration with a strong community to create a scalable and privacy-compliant platform for over 180,000 elementary school children.
Fichtner and Böhringer will explain how the use of Quarkus, Jakarta EE, and Keycloak resulted in a robust, maintainable solution – without the additional overhead of reactive systems, but instead with pragmatic, easily understandable Java code. They will highlight how Java standards and community support were key to the success of the project.
Attendees can expect to learn:
- How to implement secure and scalable Java projects – even with a small team.
- How Java communities (especially JUGs) and the Buddy approach can help in the further development of projects.
- Why standards in projects often provide more value than the "hype" around new technologies.
- How pragmatic technology decisions solve real problems.
A Talk for Real Solutions in Real Life
This talk is aimed at developers and project leaders who are not just planning on a greenfield, but want to tackle real challenges. The focus is on the practical implementation of solutions with modern Java technologies that work reliably and stably in everyday operations.
Through the partnership with the University of Regensburg and the BYLES project, XDEV demonstrates how modern technology, standards, and a strong partner network lead to success. A detailed report about this cooperation is available in the XDEV Success Stories.
